A Chit Chat with Arabia Weddings: Abaya Designer Rania Darwish
Talented fashion designer Rania Darwish is owner and founder of Triosa brand.
The Abu Dhabi-based fashion designer released her latest Abaya collection at the Premier Motors, the official dealer of Maserati vehicles in Abu Dhabi during the "Fashion Visits the Home of Style" event.
We had the chance to ask Rania Darwish a few questions and here is what she had to say:
- Tell us more about your start, how did you get into the abaya design business?
Ever since I was little I was obsessed with looking at fashion magazines and following the latest fashion shows by international fashion designers, such as Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, and many others.
I was so interested in fashion that I even used to record the shows and watch them over and over again.
The first time I drew a sketch, it was a sketch of pants and a blouse in 2007, and I actually designed and tailored it and then wore it at one of the events.
The design got many positive comments and all the guests loved it, which made me more confident and I knew I had to design more pieces.
I wanted to design pieces that suit all ages, backgrounds, and cultures.
My love for the Arabic culture, such as the Jordanian and Palestinian embriodery, can be seen in my designs - I love to combine traditional embroidery with my modern designs.
Ever since I moved to the UAE, I have been following the latest trends, while keeping an eye on traditional and modest styles.
- What materials, fabrics and colors did you use in the new collection?
I created a fashion collection that has 40 pieces, made from different fabrics such as danetlle, chiffon, and silk.
As for the colors, they varied between blue, white, red, and green, as well as, black.
I also used printed fabrics with brids and flowers. I made sure to combine all those aspects in my design in a way that creates a unique and elegant piece, without being over the top.
I designed a unique abaya inspired by Maserati, I even added the Maserati logo to the sleeves in a way that kept the abaya elegant. I was also inspired to add the shape of the Maserati logo on different areas of the abaya.
The name "Tramontana" is inspired by the name of the wind blowing in Italy, and the name was chosen in the style of "Maserati" and the names of some of its cars such as "Jibli" and "Levante."
- Where can people buy your abayas?
You can contact me directly on my Instagram account @triosafashion, and you can take a look at different designs on the account as well.
- How do bridal abayas differ from other abayas in design and fabric?
I always prefer that the bride wears a white colored abaya, as white symbolizes happiness and joy in the Arab culture. As for the fabric, I like to design bridal abayas made of silk, velvet, or dantelle and chiffon, to give the bride a feminine and delicate touch.
I personally prefer to add some stones and embriodery to make it look richer and more luxurious.
- Can a bride collaborate with you to customize her own abaya?
Yes, I designed many abayas for Henna parties, Katb Ktab, and other pre-wedding events, and they were mostly simple and luxurious at the same time.
