An Exclusive Interview with Jewelry Designer Pavit Gujral
Pavit Gujral is an award-winning jewelry designer and gemologist, now based in Dubai, aims at being the ‘Pop-star’ of the fine jewelry industry.
Pavit graduated from the renowned Gemological Institute of America, New York, and has won many awards in the US and India for her designs and aspires to continue this trend.
Born in Calcutta, and raised in Chandigarh, Pavit had exposure to two completely different and unique cultures. Calcutta is all about art, history, and chaos, whereas Chandigarh is a relatively modern and well-planned city. Both cities have played an important role in inculcating her interest in art and design.
We had the chance to ask Pavit a few questions about her career, and here is what she had to say:
Tell us more about how you started your brand and why you decided to launch it in the Middle East.
Being a creative person, I have always been inclined towards the design and fashion industries. Furthermore, my love for gemstones motivated me to pursue my gemology and jewelry design courses at the Gemological Institute of America, New York in 2015.
Soon after that, I established my company and there has been no looking back ever since. I have spent the last few years building a brand comprising bold, unique, and award-winning jewelry pieces, and I feel there is no better market than the Middle East, especially Dubai to showcase my pieces. People here are trendy and bold enough to take the plunge and wear these pieces!
From where do you get your inspiration, especially for your latest collection?
All my pieces are inspired and have a story. My major inspiration is from nature and my travels. I currently have 6 collections: Marine (inspired by my scuba diving), Sylvan (inspired by the forest), Voyage ( inspired by my travels), Memoir, La Fleur (inspired by flowers), and a Men’s collection, which is the newest addition to the brand.
Moving to Dubai and the Middle East has inspired me to work on a collection based on the Arab World. I am conceptualizing the new collection by taking inspiration from the Arab culture, colors, scripture, topography, animals, and, of course, the desert!
Can a bride-to-be customize her jewelry? How long does it take to come up with a design?
Yes of course! I work on the concept of customized and bespoke jewelry pieces. Every piece can be tailor-made to the bride’s requirements in terms of colors, design, budget, etc.
What materials and stones do you use when creating your pieces?
All the pieces are set in 18K Gold with top quality precious and semi-precious gemstones and diamonds. Being a gemologist, I want to educate people about various colored gemstones that are available and are extremely valuable as well!
I always encourage my clients to use colored stones for their engagement/weddings rings as well!
What are the latest jewelry trends, especially regarding bridal jewelry?
I feel brides nowadays are diverging from traditional jewelry to more contemporary pieces for their wedding day!
Diamonds and colored stones set in modern unique designs are taking over the trend.
